On January 7, 2021, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities approved PSE&G’s smart meter program, part of the Energy Cloud – a system that will help transform PSE&G into a smart energy services company and change the way we serve our customers.
The Energy Cloud, enabled by the system-wide implementation of smart-meter technology, would create a real-time digital communication network linking PSE&G with all 2.3 million of its customers.
Such a network will:
- Provide near real-time outage detection and dispatch restoration crews automatically – eliminating the need for customers to self-report power disruptions.
- Analyze a customer’s energy usage and recommend adjustments to thermostat settings or appliance use in order to help save energy and money.
- Work with smart home assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa to give customers the ability to manage their energy spending or reduce their household’s carbon footprint.
The core of the Energy Cloud is the implementation of smart meters – safe, state-of-the-art hardware and software that will provide two-way communications between the customer and PSE&G, allowing for near real-time data gathering and analysis. PSE&G plans to convert all 2.3 million existing electric customers to smart meters by the end of 2024.
Smart meters and the supporting communications network can help expedite electric service restorations when severe weather strikes, help customers increase their home energy savings, and improve service quality.
A smart meter network is essential to PSEG’s Powering Progress vision for a future in which we help our customers use less energy; ensure that the energy they do use is cleaner; and deliver that energy more reliably than ever.
The implementation of a smart meter network is another step toward achieving Gov. Phil Murphy’s clean energy vision for New Jersey. The improved communications will lead to fewer truck dispatches and other efficiencies that are expected to reduce PSE&G’s carbon dioxide emissions by about 2,800 metric tons per year.
PSE&G is committed to working with its union partners and all of its employees on the transition to smart meters, which will occur over several years.
The Energy Cloud represents a digital transformation that reimagines today’s energy grid as a network connecting homes and businesses with a universe of clean energy sources and services, using data to help customers to customize their energy use in whatever manner suits their needs.
